As usual, was doing my grocery shopping at 9pm on a Saturday night because that's when the least amount of people are there...

Walking through produce section I spot what appears to be a gorgeous blond girl out of the corner of my eye. Why would someone like her be doing grocery shopping on a Saturday night? Hope I don't run into her later...

Run into her in the cereal aisle, she smiles at me. I avoid eye contact, smile at the ground. She takes off her jacket and is wearing like a running outfit or something.

Run into her again when we were both looking at yoghurt... She's standing in front of the yoghurt I like reading the label... I just pick up whatever and GTFO!

Also, I'm pretty sure she went to the same high school as me. She was a grade or two below. We never really talked but I remembered her name and that she played clarinet and softball. Could not ask for an easier opportunity to talk to somebody - "hey, you went to X high school didn't you? Kathleen, right?"

As soon as I get to my car my brain goes to work rationalizing - "you don't want a girlfriend anyways... You don't have time for that... It would get in the way... Going on dates is expensive... You don't like people anyways... You're going to be gone for 6 months anyways and it wouldn't work out... She was only smiling because she recognized you..."

Yes, that would be the rational thing to do wouldn't it?

It's too bad you didn't say this... it's simple and friendly enough that if you were wrong you could drop it from there without much fear of verbal assault from her - and could lead to a nice conversation if you were right.

[shrug] Don't beat yourself up about it... though I know EXACTLY how you feel about botching a good opportunity or two... or ten...

Keep shopping there... same time... maybe a couple items each time for the excuse to be there and maybe she'll turn up again?

Hang in there... most of us have been in that boat before!
