The word nice.
I could make exactly the same argument about being kind, that it's only an external behaviour and say that being it's being nice that comes from within. He's just taking the word 'nice' on the face of it, acting as if 'nice' never warrants any further elaboration or explanation, whereas being kind does. He should say to his kids 'be nice because you should treat people the way you want to be treated' or 'be nice because being hurtful to others is not a good value to live by' and then it does have some meaning. There is nothing inherent in the word kind that means it will make you self reflect and consider the very substance of character. He just happens to interpret it that way. Good for him, but it's hardly profound.
Urgh.
