More than once, I see a cute girl pass by as I walk around, and they smile as we pass by. Okay, there are women probably triple my age who do that (prob just to be friendly) but I am probably sure some of the girls do this to show genuine interest.... (right?)

I think it's rather disappointing especially if it happens on the street, because we're probably headed somewhere. If it happens on the street again, what's the best approach to things if I catch on quickly enough and am interested? Is it usual for people to be so friendly to strangers they see only for a few seconds?

Usually a smile is just a smile. Smile back, maybe say, "Hi" and move on. Asking out girls you meet on the street passing by is going to be a lot more nos than yesses.

When I read the title of the thread, I was picturing catcalling female construction workers.

Happens to me sometimes or I catch someone out the corner of my eye looking at me with interest.. I guess there is something in there to be said of confidence and going up and initiating conversation but I don't think it's essential as some people may be disturbed depending on how you come off when you approach, but generally a smile is to be viewed positively or sometimes as an invitation depending where you are, how close they are to you, etc.

And may frequently result in getting a face full of pepper spray.

You must live in a very f****d up area if almost every female you pass is carrying pepper spray with them.

You must live in a very f**** up headspace if you always respond to humor so rudely. I said absolutely nothing about where I live, only about how unfamiliar women are likely to respond if one assumes that every polite smile is an invitation to romance. My apologies, if I had noticed what section this thread was in, I wouldn't have bothered to comment at all.
