I got invited by OKQ* to be a moderator......not really sure why. Maybe my profile actually looks real, compared to many others....as I've discovered during my first foray into moderation....LOL

Also, the first few days I was on there, I got several messages from people with profiles and photos that didn't look real......and I responded to the messages and called the sender on it. In all cases, their profile was quickly deleted. Maybe that had something to do with being asked to moderate. :)

As a heads-up to the L&D forum, I just want to note that most of the phony/scammer photos/profiles are in the female, under-25 group. Most of the disgusting/obscene photos are in the male, 30-50 age group (unfortunately, posted by real people, not scammers). But the vast majority of the reviews I'm asked to do (like 90%) are in the female, under-25 group.

So, all you young men out there, be aware that you are the primary target of scammers on dating sites.......

Anyway, this is kinda cool because, WTF, I need *something* to occupy my time!

*The "Q" is because I don't want them to find this and kick me out for revealing their "secrets" - LOL!

Also note that if someone "blocks" or "Hides" you it tells your their account has been deleted, because if it told you you had been blocked and you were a stalker you would just make a new account.

Thanks for the info. I got messages from girls that I did not respond to, thought they were fake. You confirmed my suspicions. Why would somebody make a fake account and randomly message people on these sites? What is there to gain?

Back when I was on OKC I was asked to be a moderator after a couple of years. I signed up back in like 2003 I think, and in probably 2005ish I was asked to be a moderator.

I checked profiles once in a while, but most of them were on the level as far as I could remember. I usually wound up flagging profiles for poor pictures, really.

I'm interested in knowing this too. Why on earth would they create a fake profile? What is the purpose?

Hence why okc is a waste of time for most guys, not only the gender ratio is too imbalanced (way more males) but also fakes make it even more imbalanced.

I don't get it. When I ask males about their experiences, I get so many different answers. Some guys say they see about 3 to 4 girls per month. Most say they meet girls who are nothing like they say on their profiles. Rarely do I hear about a match made in heaven, although I know a few girls who are in relationships out of POF.

I meet about 2 girls a month when I actually put in the effort to send out messages. I'm pretty selective in who I'll actually send messages to though, so finding someone that it looks like I may be compatible with is the most challenging part. Not to mention, I find it too stressful/time consuming to talk to more than one person at a time on those sites, so I probably end up meeting people at a slower rate because of that. So far I've only had one major surprise, most people have been exactly to the letter who I've expected them to be from their profiles and our conversations.

I don't think that the fake profiles are terribly common, and they are often painfully easy to spot. Most of the ones I've seen have professional pictures of a model and say something stupid like "this site is boring, come talk to me on my site for more pics". Basically any picture that looks airbrushed is dubious in nature on those sites lol, at least the dreaded bathroom selfies have a sense of realism to em'!

Also of note: success on those sites is a strong function of where you live. When I lived in a tiny redneck town in the middle of nowhere, there were like 30 women within a 100 mile radius, and most were morbidly obese chain smokers with 3-4 kids. Since I moved the demographic has shifted and the number of users dramatically increased.

I have been on dating sites for 10 years on and off and sent out lots of messages and I have never met one person.
What are your tricks, do you guys use fake profiles with fake pics to meet more people?
I must either be one of the ugliest people in the world or it is incredibly bad luck.

Exactly. The old "if it's too good to be true, it probably is."

I think I'm still a moderator on there. I think they hand out the tag randomly if your account is reasonably old and you log in regularly.

2 per month sounds pretty successful to me. I'm with you on the "selective". Mostly because a high percentage of men are either pretty much illiterate, or if not, interested in casual only. Then there's the BS ones. I must admit I haven't spent a lot of time on there lately, because I think it's hard work, and who needs 2 full time jobs?

Aspie19828 10 years and no dates? That's so sad :( What happens? Do you ask and get rejected, or is it a lack of courage? Do you live in a remote place?

The "girls" (i.e. mostly men looking to make a buck) make fake profiles, seduce people on the sites and hit them up for money and once they get it block the profile and cease communication. I know in middle school some of the kids made a fake profile(s) with an image found by goggling and would message random people, set up dates and then laugh about it.

At least one of them got expelled for soliciting naked pictures using a school computer.
