I am not really sure if this is valid, but it struck a cord with me.

The only negative I see is getting a dog for the wrong reasons, not wanting the dog really, and not being committed to its life-long care. An alternative might be working with shelter dogs or something like that.

It also begs the question 'Is the opposite true?' That is, is a cat a woman magnet?

Maybe you should just get a cat or dog kitchen magnet and call it close enough

The dog might just be an effective conversation opener but after that you have to rely on your social skills again, this is inevitable.

With a dog I think people are more likely to have a topic in common with you so they might have an easier time starting a conversation with you, or you them.
I also believe taking the time to care for an animal says a lot about how responsible you are, and what kind of person you are and so on, and it may get people thinking about you more as a person they know then just a random.

Once again society is attempting to brainwash me into believing I am a miserable loser of a woman simply because I don't have a man. I am not getting a dog ever, especially for such a stupid reason. I have two cats, though. Do you think they keep men away? Not my dad, he also loves cats. :)

I'd often heard it the other way around, that animals (including dogs) attract women.

I think you misunderstood the article. It was titled/intended for people who are actively seeking a companion. Quite a few folks are here. It just doesn't apply in your case.

People with dogs, especially lovely dogs get massive attention because of the animal and it gets them a foot in the door. Never though, get a pet for the wrong reason.

When I meet people with their dogs, I only care about the dog and just chit chat with the person so they will let me pet the dog. I know the dogs in my area better than their owners for that reason. I think for a lot of other women, owning a dog doesn't make a guy more desirable. A dog is just one way of meeting other dog lovers, but it doesn't mean you're gonna pull chicks with your labradoodle.

Edit: I misread the gender in the article. Apparently having a dog is a dude magnet. I heard the same thing with the genders flipped. Either way, its all nonsense. Dog folk are more likely to ignore people when they can hang out with the dog.
