Usually, for people with ASD's, writing things down conversationally is much easier than talking face-to-face.
I would think that this would give you the confidence to talk face-to-face with people with more ease.
In my case, I've always been great at communicating through writing, it's the face-to-face I have trouble with. It wasn't really the online communications that helped me, but the interactions after meeting in person. By meeting so many people who are, essentially, complete strangers, and having conversations with them, it has dramatically improved my conversational skills. As they say, practice makes perfect!
