OK, so I just got a strange phone call from someone, who for the sake of anonymity I shall call M. Not knowing any M's I was little cautious and I said something along the lines of 'I don't believe I know any M's', whereupon I was informed that a mutual friend J had given her my number. She said that she wanted help with some study. Still confused and having asked about the nature of the study I was told that it was about masturbation (!). I said that I wasn't particularly impressed about J having given my number out because I value my privacy (well, that and phone phobia, which I didn't mention) and she said that she was surprised because J had told her that she thought I would be fine with it (whatever 'it' is). She then said something about catching up* and I asked if we had ever actually met. Apparently, she knows me but we have never actually met, whatever that means. She then asked to speak to my sister, who was not here at the time. Finally, she said to say hello to my sister (who I'm almost certain doesn't know her) and said goodbye. She also mentioned several times that she was embarrassed (by my lack of enthusiasm presumably - but how could I be enthusiastic when I didn't even know what was going on).
OK, I'm really confused. What was that all about? It occurs to me that maybe J was trying to set me up with a friend (in which case it went terribly
), but I don't know, that was a very odd conversation. I think I'm going to have to have a word with J when I see her next.
Does anyone have a clue what was happening here? I assume that I was supposed to understand what was happening so it should be possible to figure it out, but still...
* It was at this point that it occurred to me that this may not have actually been entirely about a study.
