Quote:
SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — Cho Won-hyuk stands in front of his bedroom mirror and spreads dollops of yellow-brown makeup over his forehead, nose, chin and cheeks until his skin is flawless. Then he goes to work with a black pencil, highlighting his eyebrows until they're thicker, bolder.

"Having a clean, neat face makes you look sophisticated and creates an image that you can handle yourself well," the 24-year-old college student said. "Your appearance matters, so when I wear makeup on special occasions, it makes me more confident."

Cho's meticulous efforts to paint the perfect face are not unusual in South Korea. This socially conservative, male-dominated country, with a mandatory two-year military conscription for men, has become the male makeup capital of the world.

South Korean men spent $495.5 million on skincare last year, accounting for nearly 21 percent of global sales....

The metamorphosis of South Korean men from macho to makeup over the last decade or so can be partly explained by fierce competition for jobs, advancement and romance in a society where, as a popular catchphrase puts it, "appearance is power." Women also have a growing expectation that men will take the time and effort to pamper their skin.

Evidence of this new direction in South Korean masculinity is easy to find. In a crowded Seoul cafe, a young woman takes some lipstick out of her purse and casually applies it to her male companion's lips as they talk. At an upscale apartment building, a male security guard watches the lobby from behind a layer of makeup. Korean Air holds annual male makeup classes for its staff at Incheon International Airport.

....

South Korean men are barraged daily with messages in popular media suggesting that flawless skin is a crucial part of any plan to get ahead at work and romance.

....

It seems an oddity to me, but I have to admit, Noel Fielding is quite cute.

In general, I don't like it when anyone (male or female) glob the stuff on to the point where it is obvious that they have it caked on their face. I think the idea behind make up is to inhance the features. If make up helps a man in South Korea get a good job or attract a good mate, go for it.

I have prosopagnosia so for me, I don't really get make up but I do understand facial looks are very important to most people. I think clothing styles are very important to most people too.

I must admit I think eye liner on guys looks good. But that's only if they're famous and in a band. Seeing as it's not normal in society, I wouldn't want a boyfriend that wears it.

Men should be allowed to wear make up if it's what makes them happy and comfortable.

It's so weird to me seeing so many threads with "should men do this?" "should women do that?". The birth sex and gender expression of a person should have no bearing on what they can or can't do.

I thought this thread would be about Goths for some reason.

I like men with eyeliner. I also like men with long hair and a goatee. Add Victorian attire to that and I got myself a delicious morsel :)

Who is one to judge? Each person to their own whim.

Well I think that is a bit much, I mean I think people should wear make up because they want to....not because its the thing to do that everyone else is doing. But I really see no issue with guys wearing make up.

I think the world would have been better off without make up because it portray an unrealistic standard of beauty. In any case, I think if people didn't know that standard of beauty, they would see the natural form as beautiful.

Agreed. People could also see the natural form as being more beautiful than they already do.

Well, if it works for them fair enough. It was quite popular in the 80's.

Those 1980s hair metal bands like "Motley Crue" wore makeup. They looked like ugly women, and they got lots of real women.

If men want to wear it that's their decision just as much as it's my decision to wear none at all.
