I.E. you wish to build one... I suggest you study mesh networking, as a mobile computing nerd I've pondered this a few years now, for non-techies Craigslist might work, though I like the chat client Empathy (has a geoIP local lobby function) and I've geard good things about augmented reality gaming, though if it's just about discourse and mingling, LET'S CODE THAT!
this "geoIPlocal function" in chat client. So you can browse local users and chat them up? I'd like to be able to have a setting where u can start topics and chat. I like the mesh network idea, but I think it may be easier in some ways for prople to convince their ISP's to provide an intranet. I don't like that a backbone node can just go out 50 miles away and make the internet completely inaccessible. There should be a way for people within the community to communicate with eachother with the infrastructure already there, whether they have access to a DNS router or not. It would be cool though to just create infrastructure using wireless. Im pretty sure if enough people were on board, u could have a way of communicating to everyone in a town just using Ad Hoc through wireless routers. u may be able to do this with a kind of chatroom environment for the whole town.An organized forum setting might be harder to pull off.
augmented or virtual reality might make dating really interesting. It could be a safe way of having first dates before meeting IRL.
