I meet so many people online that Id love to know in real person, but more often than not, they live halfway around the world. I wish every county had a kind of intranet or localized internet, where people could chat in forums locally. It would be really cool. You could probably get a lot of dates and social circles that way. Like, I wish I could form social circles with people on the spectrum. I know there's facebook, but its kind of limiting. I cant stand dating sites. too formal. I'd like to just meet people that are like minded in various ways and meet for coffee or at a library somewhere. Like a lot of socialization is being replaced by the internet, but its hard to translate this into the real world.

I.E. you wish to build one... I suggest you study mesh networking, as a mobile computing nerd I've pondered this a few years now, for non-techies Craigslist might work, though I like the chat client Empathy (has a geoIP local lobby function) and I've geard good things about augmented reality gaming, though if it's just about discourse and mingling, LET'S CODE THAT!

this "geoIPlocal function" in chat client. So you can browse local users and chat them up? I'd like to be able to have a setting where u can start topics and chat. I like the mesh network idea, but I think it may be easier in some ways for prople to convince their ISP's to provide an intranet. I don't like that a backbone node can just go out 50 miles away and make the internet completely inaccessible. There should be a way for people within the community to communicate with eachother with the infrastructure already there, whether they have access to a DNS router or not. It would be cool though to just create infrastructure using wireless. Im pretty sure if enough people were on board, u could have a way of communicating to everyone in a town just using Ad Hoc through wireless routers. u may be able to do this with a kind of chatroom environment for the whole town.An organized forum setting might be harder to pull off.

augmented or virtual reality might make dating really interesting. It could be a safe way of having first dates before meeting IRL.

I heard about an app called firechat. It allows people to communicate through bluetooth.

Thing is... as we continue the internet implementations and usage habits we have now, we're living proof that subsecting the internet can be REALLY DANGEROUS. Just look at Nofakeinternet.org

I like networks that ignore borders. I wouldn't dream of dating on the internet (or even via 1:1 chat) because I live here, unless a girl I know in person made a case for it. With the kinds of demands placed on a guy from my technical background, I'm very cautious about exposing anyone I love to the franetic pace of the technology world.

That said, I'm delighted that anyone can see positive, informal uses for mesh networking. Whatever you do, remember to stay human. Also, Firechat's ok but you're thinking of two wifi standards: ad-hoc and 'direct' (more of a localized web - won't interfere with WLAN internet service).

France had a national intranet called Minitel, I am not sure if it's still functional.
