I saw on the daily show this lady talking about an app called bumble where girls intiate the contact to guys. Thats pretty cool but what do I say when they message me? I feel like I should say something playful and light but I can only think of likes, dislikes, jobs etc

Be yourself. That is one of the awesome things about online dating, you can be yourself and just ignore if it doesn't work out. I dated someone when the internet first came out...you know, the days of CompuServe and AOL lol It was great because we could just be ourselves. A hi, how are you, where are you from (NOT what's your address and/or town lol), what do you like to do for fun? Where have you traveled to? and similar are great ways to find out more about people, get them to talk about themselves and start a good and meaningful conversation :-)

Respond to what they send you, a 'cut-and-dry' prepared response will do nothing but push them away...

Usually, you will be given a question to answer or a statement to comment to; this is standard practice for the first message in online dating.
What you should do, however, is to place something for them to comment on/ask about in your profile text (if you are allowed to write one), mention your hobby or some uncommon travel destination you went to lately so they will have an opening for their initiating message.
