Howdy. I'm having a quandary. For the most part, I am very conservative and old fashioned, however, at times I have a "I feel like breaking the rules" side to me. THE PROBLEM: I want a nose piercing, but what has stopped me is work because it is against the rules (and I am a big rule follower). It has taken me over a month to find a decent place who will do the piercing and I have figured out that I can cover it up at work with some sort of bandaid or makeup. Also, several night shift co-workers have them and they also have tattoos which are against the rules.

I am not in my 20's anymore. My question is: What are your thoughts on adult women having a nose ring? Is it attractive or looked down upon (especially for someone who is wanting to continue with their education and become a nurse practitioner)? I hate for my job to dictate how I can live my life, however, I do find people with a lot of tattoos to look very unprofessional. Is a nose ring in the same category?

Hey NurseAngela, fellow nurse here. :)

I too had thought at one time to get my nose pierced because why? I dunno - because I just wanted to do something different.

But I didn't, partly because my nose is already big and I did not need something to draw attention to it lol

So I didn't do it and now I'm glad I didn't because now I look at noserings and, while there are some that look okay on people, some just don't. For me, anyway, I'm glad I didn't do it.

I personally don't look down on them or anything, because there are some that look okay, but they're just not for me. I also think it probably depends on which part of the country you live. A nose ring in say California probably won't even get a second look while in say Arkansas or West Virginia, it probably would.

I wouldn't think it's worth all that hassle.

And there's always the possibility of infection.....

Or suppose the hospital you work in is seeking to fire people because of budgetary constraints. They'll look for any pretext to fire someone.

Thank you for chiming in. I do want to clarify that I want a stud and not a ring. I would like it to be a cubic zirconia and to be on the small side which I find more tasteful. I saw an LPN the other night who had one and I just loved it! I am worried that if I change my mind and take it out then I will have a scar, but she did take hers out and moved it to the other side and you can't even notice the one side had been pierced. I don't know why, but it is something that I have wanted to do now for 3 months and I haven't really gotten it out of my mind (usually meaning that I will end up doing something) and every time I see someone that has one I still really want it. Everyone I talk to about it say that I would look great with it especially with my long hair and my nose seems to be smaller and perfect for it. I've always like dressing and looking "girly" with just one thing that is out of the ordinary to show that I am different and have my own style. I just don't want to sneeze and the thing flies out and hits someone.

A sidenote: My Ma is totally against it, but she is always against most out of the ordinary things that I want to do.

The infection part does worry me. However, one can get some serious infections and even Hep C from tattoos and that doesn't seem to stop anyone that I know from getting a tattoo - except me.

The hospital has an extremely high turnover now as it is. If they did try to lay people off, I would just have to remove it I suppose. My thing is that I'm tired of having to follow the rules and not living my life how I would like to while everyone else breaks the rules and doesn't give a crap. Ever since I became a nurse it seems I don't feel "girly" anymore. No nice fingernails (they can't be long), hair all tied up, only one piercing per ear, no tattoos (even though I'm not a tattoo person). It gets old being told what to do all of the time just because I'm supposed to look like Florence Nightingale or something.

If you like the look of it and you want to get it done, you should do it.
A small stud or diamond can look quite classy.
A hole in your nose is no big deal, not like getting a tattoo.
If worse comes to worse you can take the stud out and it's practically invisible.

Pardon me, but who is that guy in your avatar? His eyes are very hypnotizing - in other words, I think he's a cutie and totally opposite of what I would bring home to Ma! (He'd have to be a few years older too, of course)

Never too old. It depends how you dress, too.
If you dress too conservative it might not suit.
Do you have tattoos? :) If so flash them off, wear something like a casual dress or black t and the piercing should be a o k!

My friend has a stud like the one you're describing, and I think it looks nice, not too obvious. I don't think anyone would have a problem with it. I also know there are some high-quality magnetic ones out there. That'd be a nice way to have the look without any commitment.

Actually, I dress up with lace and such (girly clothes). No tattoos. I always wanted one on my ankle though - just one. My nose stud would match my ears most likely. I'd like to get an expensive stud eventually. So, no, I'm not usually a casual dress type person.

The little studs I think are conservative enough, they're not even that noticeable I think so I don't think you'd have to worry about being considered unprofessional. They come out right?

I actually have a fake nose ring and it looks real and doesn't look too bad. If I wanted a ring, I'd leave it at that. The magnetic nose studs are really too big - I want a pretty small stud. I'm also afraid of breathing in the magnet if I take a quick deep breath for some reason - like if I'm choking on something (would be an example).

You can't take them out for 3 months or more depending on how quick you heal. My ears healed really slow and the top two holes actually closed up within a day of me taking out the studs. I got one ear re-pierced and finally just let those go. I now only have one earring for each ear.

Never had a nose ring, but I did I have a bolt through my neck for a while. It started to interfere with Wi-Fi reception, though, so I had to take it out.

I had my nose pierced. It didn't hurt to get it pierced. If you really want it go for it. It's a very classy piercing. I like Monroe piercings and small gauges too.
