How to talk to girls at gathering or event?

I think I'm going to take initiative and going to a gathering for young adults this week. I need some quick advice on how to prepare, and if I meet a girl or even a talk to a guy there, I want to be sure I know what to say and how to keep the conversation going. Even if I want to actually ask her to hang out later.

Make sure you wear clean clothes, and that they match pretty well.

Something like: red polo shirt and Levis jeans would probably be good.

Make sure your hair is clean and neatly combed

What sort of "gathering" is this?
