I was in a little coffee shop about 15 minutes ago buying my daily breakfast bagel and i looked down to use the interac pin pad, when i was done i looked back up and noticed that she (the cashier) was looking down as well, a few seconds later she looked back up at which point she yawned and then turned her head to look at the clock. We were facing each other, she was standing up straight, arms by her side, but head down as explained earlier. Also, i started getting a sharp pain in my elbow when i moved my arm up, and started to say ow, ow ow. At which point she asked what's wrong.
Was she mirroring my behaviour (looking down) because she is interested?

Try smiling at her. Does she smile back? That's always a good sign. If she likes you the smile may be reflected back at you with even more intensity than your own. BTW easier said than done. I am rubbish at smiling at people I am interested in.

I will give that a try tomorrow.

I have read up on mirroring. I would say to hard to say for now. People mirror for all sort of reasons only one of them being the fancy you. Mirroring is actually sort of contagious sometimes. The thing with the elbow is a classic example of empathy/sympathy.

A girl who I worked out didn't fancy me use to mirror me all the time if I put my elbow on the table she would do the same, if I put my hand down on my lap likewise.

There's really no way to know for sure. People will smile just to be polite, and say "how are you?" just as a way of saying "hello". Sometimes two people in a room will make the same gesture, or stand the same way out of mere coincidence.

But a requited smile is nice whether they're interested or not. And it's wise to check the fingers for rings (or other conspicuous, culturally relevant symbols).

Was there any reason to post on a thread almost 10 years old?
