I have. "It's closing time, have to ask you to leave."

'asking someone out' has different meanings in the UK.

1. Asking someone to be your significant other
2. Start a fight

I have had both.

I have also been asked to leave a premises at closing time - usually a pub

I haven't, I'm paranoid about potentially upsetting others and an obsessive rule-follower, so I keep a close eye on the time when I know a place is going to close soon.

I've never been asked out in the other sense of the phrase, either - and I'm female.

This could be another interesting US/UK language thread (since it may have been pre-derailed by the OP). :D

To be "asked out" in US parlance exclusively means "asked to go on a social/romantic date."

But the other possible (UK?) meaning from Ferris is more amusing. In escalating levels of seriousness, I'd say US usage is:

Asked to leave
Shown the door
Escorted out
Ejected

(If you're "escorted out" that doesn't mean you're being taken on a date.) :D

Actually, I wonder if that's the UK equivalent of the US "maybe you'd like to step outside" (which is what you say to someone an inch from your face just before you both get ejected [see above]). :D

Yeah I think it's probably it's abbreviated form. There was a guy from my town who used to ask if people wanted to take a walk down a lane with him , I didn't realise this was his fighting talk and when asked me I said 'What the f**k would I want to do that for , I don't even like you  "

I once had a visiting coworker from Sweden ask, "Would you like to come home with me?" 8O His intention was to invite me to dinner with him and his wife. I had to explain that in US vernacular, "Would you like to come home with me" is typically something that is said to the last member of the opposite sex left at the bar at closing time (or so I've heard).

"Would you like to come home with me?" is said by women in the US to men whom they want to invite for some romance. It doesn't have to be "full-monty" sex.

I have been asked out on a date before, due to self-esteem issues I didn't believe they were being honest about it.

Never been asked out in the other meaning.

Even though the majority of people on dating sites started communication (likely because of my height), I never in my life had anyone ask me out: I had to do it each and every time.

It could also be an invitation to just hang out and watch TV and nothing more. I should know: this misunderstanding happened to me once. Didn't matter in the end as we eventually got married.

See, over here I swear it would mean that.

Kind of, I've been approached several times in my life in bars and nightclubs, often w/someone physically coming on to me. And the two women I've been with, my ex came onto me one night though I pursued her first. The other time was when my friend from LA after a night at a club/bar took me up to her hotel room and came onto me.

Then again, it's possible none of these instances involved me being "asked out", depending on how you wanna look at it.

No women rarely ask men out and most women see me as worthless.

Yes. I have been asked on a date before. I said yes. I am currently dating her and she also has autism. She graduated school and is going to college. She is really kind. We have kissed a lot. My parents are worried about my heart being broken though. She also knows I love iced coffee. She sometimes has to do things for me that I find hard such as helping me button up my shirt. Its really nice to date someone who is not judgemental and also has autism.
