Quick question, when did my life get so complicated? My best friend confessed her love to me recently but I didn't feel the same way so I rejected her. She took it well though but I am going to give her some space for a bit. To make matters worse, I have been crushing on a straight girl recently even though she obviously will never feel that way about me. It feels like I'm in a cruel joke by the universe. Still, I think I did the right thing, it wouldn't have been right to lead her on.

I've never understood why life does that.

Someone is interested, they're rarely suitable.
I'm interested, there's at least a 50% chance their primary attractions don't align and there's a good chance they're not suitable either.

*sigh*

Yeah. It would be nice if the two would align for once.

Why is the greatest of all questions.

I will accept this answer - for it is the answer to life, the universe and everything.

Dating apps sure are awkward. I always get stuck making small talk and I'm never really sure when is a good time to suggest meeting up. You don't want to do it right away, but leaving it isn't great either. I asked one of my matches recently if she wanted to meet up for Karaoke. She said it probably wasn't a good idea because whilst she can sing enthusiastically, it would not be pleasant to my ears.

I joked that perhaps I could give her some pointers. This probably came across as arrogant but I'm hoping it's not taken badly. I'll give it some time and see if she replies. Perhaps suggest a different activity. I don't want to be too insistent, but I do want to express interest, you know?

Granted, I know there's not exactly a handbook on all this stuff. People are individuals, you can't really simplify them like you can with video game NPCs.

The German Philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer had an explanation for that. We unconsciously look for people who don't align well with us because it will increase the genetic diversity in our offspring, increasing the chance that they will inherit at least some genes that will be valued by the environment (and natural selection). If we breed with our exact equals, our offspring will have genes exactly like both parents, and so run the risk of missing out on genes that might actually be valued in the future.

Kind of makes sense to me in a "life isn't fair" way.

I'm not sure how that relates to me always getting crushes on gay women.

Would they be incompatible with you on some levels?

Well, gay women tend to be interested in women.

I tend to get along well with gay men. Not exactly the same, but perhaps it has to do with them being a bit less aggressive.

Inexplicably, gay women are attracted to me and I am extremely straight. I have disappointed more than one woman.

Reminds me of a former friend. I came out to her and her response was "Another one? I swear I must be a homing beacon for lesbians or something".

:lmao: Her response took me by surprise and I just burst out laughing.
