This is interesting. If sex was completely unrelated to procreation, then we probably wouldnt feel the urge to do it as the chemical reward wouldnt have evolved.
I think most/many men have a dominant mindset, they want to fight for possession of females to protect their genes (like the alpha-male Lion who eats all the cubs that arent his) Even though contraception has been invented, the possessiveness is too deeply rooted in most men to dissolve easily imo.
Then again if you look at Bonobo monkeys (our closest genetic relatives) they have a matriachal societies where sex is shared freely with the whole group, and acts to diffuse aggression and keep everyone happy. Were also related to chimpanzees though.. So i suppose polygamy can and does work, but its not for everyone.
