Is it an unreasonable request for a female to want to e-mail for several months, to get aquanted, before she wants to meet you? Should she send the first e-mail? If you don't have interest in her, can you prosecute her criminally for sending an e-mail to you? How many times before you legally can prosecute?

Um if you don't want to get emails from her, just block her address.

edit: oops, wrote from the wrong perspective there. i thought you were a guy wanting to prosecute a girl for emailing you too much. so change of advice here: ya, go for it. it's def ok for a girl to be the first to contact, by email or whatever. and the guy shouldn't be able to prosecute you for that.

It seems weird, but if this is what you want, then you should definitely send the first e-mail. I'm sure that there wouldn't be any criminal prosecution, as long as you weren't sending anything threatening or illegal. He can always just not write back.

Come to think of it, I do remember some pen-pal clubs, many years ago, where you could meet a mate in a different country. You would start out writing, with the intention of eventual marriage. Actually, I do know some that ended up married that way. The ones that I know of, the husband was American, and the wife was from the Philippines.

I had an e-mail girlfriend once, but I got the impression she was a fake, so I broke off contact with her. She seemed a bit too interested in sex to be true, and her interest in me waned when I told her I wasn't really the musician she thought I was. She found my e-mail adress on a Yahoo group for bassplayers.

If it is done over a certain course of time, then you can pursue harassment charges with the authorities.

Harassment charges?

The police generally only
want you to make one
complaint per incident.

Subjective. In my opinion, no.

Not likely that I would, so yes.

People have sued over less, and people have been laughed out of court. (Even if they did manage to win.)

See everyone else's response: The action taken would be to block her. If she does it from a new e-mail address once you block an old one, then you might consider other means of making her stop. Don't know if there's any legal action that can be taken that would be similar to a restraining order but for the internet. Probably not. I'm not an expert. Also likely that someone would say "Stop sending me e-mails," then block, then consider taking other forms of action.

So its a good bet, if a female sent 2 e-mails to a person, then dropped it, that this said female wouldn't be flogged, or publically humiliated by any of you fellows, if you had to work with her on and off for the next few years? Would you just pretend it never happened?

Yeah. The flogging would be internal,
for not responding. Always wondering
if she meant something by them, and
"how was I to know," from so little. :P

A person has to clearly say "no" and the other person still send messages anyway before it can be considered harassment.

As for who makes first contact, it doesn't have to be the male 100% of the time... I dont know why society considers it to be that way...

Well, thats good advise. Long ago I sent several e-mails to someone I really wanted to date. He never answered them, and with the e-mail system, i was unsure that he recieved them. He never said no, or responded in anyway. I really wished that he had just sent something back that said "no thank you, I am in a relationship" but he didn't. I got burned really badly, but I will spare the details. So now, I am reluctant to do that.
