And not just two friends doing something together? Asked virtually everyone with luck and without and not a one can provide an actual answer admitting so on their own part.

A date is a "date" when two parties are spending time together for the purposes of exploring or furthering a romantic relationship. In the NT world, this is usually something that is communicated nonverbally.

Ask if you can pay for them. This pretty much determines things on an official level. If girls ask you to do little things for them, then they have a date in mind, if you're alone. Don't worry about it too much, I've noticed NTs arguing back and forth about what makes a date official, its one of those things nobody really knows too much about, so don't be worried.

I dont know about asking to pay, I've always found its best not to pay for a date on a first "date." It ends up setting a standard that you can get stuck in: always having to pay for the date. Plus I've always found that girls these days want to pay for themselves, any girl worth dating would insist upon it.

Hell I wish I knew. I was apparently seeing a young lady a while back. This was news to me... not that I didn't want to... she was smart, intelligent, witty, had similar interests and great looking. But I enjoyed her company as a friend so would call her up when I wanted to do things (as well as my few other friends). A few months into this and she tells me she's breaking up with me. I never knew we were going out.

Oh well.

If it is communicated nonverbally, how am I supossed to pick up on it?

Well, that's why were different , isn't it. NTs don't have a problem with it but we do. I wish I had an easy answer, but I don't. The best answer I have is that, over time, many of us learn to pick-up on non-verbal cues. I know it's not a great answer, but the best one I have.

I am curious on a conceptual level but I am taking this girl I've been interested in since September to dinner at a rather nice place on Thursday. I can't really read her well as she tends to hide how she feels from people, including her own family. I don't think its a date but only because I don't think she would view it as such. Be nice if there was some sort of guideline to follow.

Guess I shall find out come Thursday.

She is going with you to dinner at a nice place. That's a good start in my book.
