My inbox has been given to receiving letters of a lot of "Nigerian" romance scams (well, actually from all manner of West African countries, really).
The following is excerpted from such a scam letter. I decided to bait the scammer into replying once, and will now terminate contact with the scammer:
Quote:
Sweet Love,
I am more than happy in your reply to my mail. How your day today? My name is Miss Tolma gerba, I have one and has never been married, and I am 24 years old from Cote d'Ivoire in West Africa and currently residing in NI ¿½ dioum refugee camp here in Senegal, where I am seeking political asylum from the civil war which was waged in my country the past two years. I surferings and pain here in this camp and I really have to be a man of my hand to encourage me and gave me good advice in life and help me get out of this situation.
My late father, Dr. Rufus gerba was chairman managing director (GERBA INDUSTRIAL COMPANY LTD), in Abidjan, economic capital of my country, and he was also a personal adviser to the former head of state before the rebels attacked our house one early morning and killed my mother and father in cold blood. It is only me that is alive now, and I was able to make my way to the neighboring country of Senegal, where I live now as a refugee. This refugee camp is headed by Reverend Father, I have used his office computer to send you this letter, and I just enter his office when he was less busy in his office.
I would like to know more about you, your sympathies and dislikes, your hobbies and what you do now. I want to meet understanding, loyal, honest, trusthfull, kindly and friendly, and moreover, a man of vision and truth. I will tell you more about myself in my next post. Attached is my picture, hoping to hear from you as soon as possible.
Yours Forever in love
Tolma Gerba.
Attached to the document is, of course, the obligatory pictures of an attractive African-descent woman, which, though appealing, is obviously bait.
Even if there really is a Ms. Gerba who is in the Senegalese refugee camps (and my sympathies do go out to those unfortunates) I am not buying the story one bit. I'm not going to give the scammer any credit. I have seen romance scams before and will not fall for them.
I have posted this up as a warning to everyone out there to be careful of potential scams. I have not been a victim, but I know a lot of people would be. If anything, it gives perfectly decent Africans a very bad name.
