i have heard this kind of criticism before, and the irony IS pretty funny, how they all want to be orginal just like everyone else... and maybe some do like attention, but, what's wrong with that?
i personally didn't really want attention, but i used to dress slighty "punk" because it was a quick and easy way to attract other people who liked similar music. also, i knew that if people were unfazed by it, then i would probably like them, and if they gave me snotty looks, then i knew they were not the kind of people i would get along with to begin with. a spiked dog collar shortened the whole "getting to know people" process pretty effectively... you get straight to both the weirdoes and the more tolerant people that way.

I'm sure not all goths are like this, but I don't really consider it cool or original. It seems like a ploy for attention by many people (again, I'm sure not all.)
