Long before I tumbled to the fact that I have AS, I relized that I don't smile enough. The problem that I've alway had is that smiling makes me feel self concious, and I have a hard time not thinking that my smile is not very flattering. I've seen photos of me smiling and always think that I look manic or false.

I'm going to throw out a guess that I'm not the only person with this problem. So how does everybody else address the issue?

I find that I can never get a smile "right" when a photo is being taken. Honestly, I'm a pretty good looking guy, but I really start to doubt that when I see pictures of myself. I'm ALWAYS making really strange faces--crooked smile, weird looking eyes, tongue hanging out. I don't look like that when i see myself in the mirror though, but I ALWAYS ruin group photos. "you closed your eyes again! one more try!"

When I'm not really happy or laughing, I kind of have to make myself smile, like when I see someone I know, I make myself smile. Something like that. Sometimes, I kind of forget to smile when you're supposed to smile so I have to make myself do it conciously. -Power Girl

People constantly accuse me of scowling, even when I'm thinking of smiling. Does anyone else have that total disconnect between thought and facial expression? ...Wait, is that one of the symptoms of AS?

People have often asked why I don't smile spontaneously, say when someone is walking towards me. I let them think it is because I'm nearsighted, and cannot see who the person is. The real reason is that I don't have a reason to smile at you simply because you are walking towards me.

I don't think I have a good smile with my teeth showing. If I keep my mouth closed I look ok. I guess I tend to half smile a lot (i think its called a smirk?) much like sonic the hedgehog

I dont know if it is a symptom but the same thing happens to me constantly. I can be totally happy but so completely focused on keeping up with what someone is saying that they say I look angry when I thought I was looking happy.

I just don't smile. I avoid it at all costs. Smiling is unessecary to me anyway..

Customers at work complain about it to me all the time.

I find I can't smile naturally right away. I can smile once I'm in a conversation where I feel comfortable. And cameras? It's like having a gun pointed at you.
