Just say, "The sky", and they'll laugh

I hate that question, because you always have to say good, even if you don't feel good.

There was one time when my step-brother said it to me and I responded, "my cholesterol." He didn't get it!! :wall:  :duh:

I often forget to say how are you back, then realise just after I've finished talking to them, and then think "Oh, why didn't I say that,"

"What's up?" is just a way of saying hello. It doesn't really mean anything. Just say "Nothing, how are you?"

Or if you feel like talking, just tell a short story of something that you recently experienced. "My lawnmower broke and I have to buy a new one. Do you know anything about lawnmowers?"

whats up.... how are you... and all these "small talk initiators" they just annoy me... start a conversation with hi and then find a subject or get the hell out of my face. or say "anything on your mind" to allow me to pick a subject... but small talk is not my thing.

When in doubt, ask an autistic. Chances are, they're obsessed with what you need to know.

I know it is a simple and mindless script, so I have not trouble to respond.

I do remember being very confused by this question, as I continuously understood it literally. (It's 'how's it going' in Germany.) I wondered about 'going where?' and why the other would answer 'good' or 'everything's clear here'.

I was sure they were all talking a secret language. It made no sense.

Since nobody talked to me back then though, I didn't have to answer the question myself. That probably saved me from lots of embarrassing moments.

I know this is weird but people in hallways people are always like "hey man what's up?" I never know how to answer this. Should I be honest and tell them that nothing is up because my life is boring and uninteresting, just say not much, just say hi, ask them what's up or sometimes I try to be sarcastic and say "well obviously I'm sailing the Pacific Ocean" , when it is very clear that I'm walking around the hall to my next class therefore it's bit of a dumb question. I just get awkward when people ask me this..well I do when people talk to me in general but even more for this. Does anyone else feel like this over this stupid question?

I never really found it all that awkward. I guess I never thought about it, but a lot of common phrases are like that. I just respond with "not much," if it's someone I barely know or am only acquaintances with, or if it's a friend and I'm feeling neutral. If it's a friend and I'm having a bad time of it, or something melodramatic just happened, I usually say, "Well..." and then elaborate.

Hope this helps! :)

When my brother asks me this question, I pick up the nearest object (eg. an apple) and throw it in the air and say "the apple is up" I'm the only one who thinks its funny though.

I reply "long and hairy". That usually stops them. Period.
