Asperger's in Naruto (I'm serious!)
Well, I suppose most people in this forum are older than teen, but does anyone around here watch Naruto Shippuden? If so, you've probably seen the character Sai.
That character is ABSOLUTELY socially clueless. At one point the other characters go to the library and see him reading a book, the title was something along the lines of "how to make friends". And then an arrow points at him saying: "clueless about friend-making processes".
Aside from the social clumsiness, he does not seem to have other common autistic traits, such as motor coordination and speech issues.
So, do you guys think Sai is an autie/aspie?
From the Wikipedia article:
" (...) Sai has been trained to not possess or desire any type of emotion or camaraderie. After spending time with Naruto Uzumaki, however, he begins to crave bonds with other people, which has since become his primary role in the series. Sai's attempts to form bonds involve giving pet names to others; however, he often says what he actually thinks of a person, resulting him choosing names such as "fatso" and "ugly." He eventually learns from his mistakes and attempts the opposite approach, as evidenced when he calls Ino Yamanaka "gorgeous." When not making an attempt to bond with others, Sai spends his time painting and drawing, and has produced thousands of works. (...) "
Sai is not autistic (according to the plot), but he definitely acts exactly like an autistic. If it were real life (instead of Kishimoto's interpretation of human personalities through Naruto), Sai would be a high-functioning autistic (Asperger's syndrome).
sounds like a textbook case.
That doesn't make her autistic.
she is mainly shy around naruto for she likes him.

4th sin: sloth.
Oh, I've seen Sai in the most recent American Shonen Jumps.
I would consider him Aspie IF his profile said nothing about the fact that he was "trained" to be "emotionless and solitary." Other than that, I would agree.

I just like Sai's ability ... he freaking bring his drawing to life.
So cool!
But yeah i certainly see similarities.
but for me I have always related to Shikamaru the most. He is just like me especially in school. I was and still am the one who is always bored and laying outside int he grass yet when it comes to things like leadership training i am first to command and always get the job done... also i live by a motto : Path of least resistance

I never said Sai is awesome. I'm just stating facts.
Socially clueless, saying inappropriate things at inappropriate times, hilarious in a naive way, slow voice and monotone (in the anime), lack of personality, doesn't stand out (Sakura even says that to him), honest and starightforward without realizing he would offend others with his honesty, etc.
It's quite obvious.
I would consider him Aspie IF his profile said nothing about the fact that he was "trained" to be "emotionless and solitary."
This is Kishimoto's Naruto way of explaining why autistics/Aspies exist.

I don't know, but I do know that Naruto has ADHD. What about Inuyasha? If you ever have seen it. Don't you think he's Asperger's?

Mmm. Well, I wasn't intending to say that he wasn't, because in our world, he would be an Aspie. In Naruto's world, it's different...
Lots to think about.

I've actually been thinking this too for a while.
I wouldn't say he is (because he isn't real, and so cannot possess a real mental abnormality if the characterization does not explicitly state that he does), but I would say that he is an excellent example of autistic behavior.
My three favorite characters in this series are Gaara, Hinata, and Sai, mainly because of their similarities to autistic behavior.
To enforce the "Autistic Hinata" argument- she has had her bouts of obsessiveness toward her training and Naruto.
To enforce the "Autistic Sai" argument- one of those books he was reading was a manga- something that should not be taken at face-value, but he gullibly trusted the author to portray a realistic example. After seeing this, Sakura made the comment, "You really do take everything at face value, don't you?"

I doubt it. We have yet to see his fellow ROOT members act the same way he does.
I would think that becoming emotionless does not mean becoming "autistic" socially. So I don't quite understand how killing off someone's emotions turns him into the way Sai acts. Sai should've become a sociopath through such conditioning ... not an "autistic".
But then again, this is just a cartoon. Anything is possible in cartoons.

Neither Gaara nor Hinata should be considered autistic. Gaara just had a messed up childhood due to the monster inside him and Hinata is just the extremely shy type. Hinata's obsession with Naruto is a normal thing. It's called infatuation. I don't remember her being obsessed toward her training. Even so, it doesn't mean anything. Just think Naruto and Rock Lee.
Gaara and Hinata might have personality disorders but not autism.

Similarities, I said. I never made the claim that they actually did have anything.
Since it apparently wasn't clear, I'd like to explain my argument for Hinata.
If you've read this article, http://www.wrongplanet.net/article352.html you know that infatuation and the autism-related OCD involve the same chemical.
Infatuation is still normal, but Hinata takes it to abnormal extremes.
Normally, infatuation would disappear once the infatuated person and the person the infatuation is for have been separated for a while.
Not the case for Hinata, who became even more infatuated with Naruto (if that's possible) for the two years that Naruto left the Leaf Village.
I see so many times the idea that girls with AS obsess over things that normal girls like (e.g. horses), but to such a higher degree (e.g. knowing all these details about horse social behavior). That is the case with Hinata, as explained above.
Also, you can see some distinct differences between Naruto's and Rock Lee's obsession with training, and Hinata's obsession with training.
Naruto and Rock Lee are very much excited about their training. Their emotions are gratified by their training. Hinata doesn't seem to have any emotional benefit whatsoever from her training. She is completely emotion-less and stoic, and she's still obsessed with it.
Again, I am not making the claim that Sai, Hinata, or Gaara have AS. I am simply claiming that they have similarities to AS traits.
