Wait until they ask you about something.

Listen to them.

Talk about what they are finding interesting.

To make it easier, imagine that you are petting a dog or a cat.

Hmm, will this be enough to get my boyfriend's mom to like me then? I feel like there are many more elaborate rules surrounding that situation and I am just not picking up on them. :? Not that I will be able to remember this much without a lot of concentration. If only there were some kind of coach who would whisper these things in my ear when the person is right in front of me!

Zyborg, from personal experience I already was doing your first few suggestions, but I never thought about petting a cat before. This thought made boring conversations (my perspective) tolerable.

All the friends I have are NT's.
