I just finished this book. It was really difficult to get into until toward the end. He had so much going on in his life besides Asperger's, what with the abuse and all. What's more, I didn't really identify with him just because we both share a diagnosis. I never pulled pranks on the cops or toured with rock bands. So to me, it was more a collection of anecdotes from this interesting character who happened to have Asperger's. That said, the book really does pick up near the end as it starts to focus on Asperger's more directly, and the final chapters are quite touching.
This one was different from Temple Grandin's book because it is more of a memoir, Temple Grandin's books are more of a "how to" guide on social relationships. I can relate to both Temple and John Elder very well because they both experienced many of the things I did in school.
