appropriate response after someone does you a favor?

There are thank-you notes that are goofy and non-formal.

It would need to suit your personality, not be a "Dear sir, I offer unto thee formal thanks for thy intervention..." <ugh>

For me, I'd give a goofy card with something like a "far side" or similar comic (or at least comedic) theme to it. I'd just drop it on his desk at the dojo (or inbox or whatever) when he wasn't around so I could avoid the whole social aspect to it.

And if you do decide to pay him back the money and want to avoid the whole social aspects of that as well, put it inside the card.

You should pay him back and quickly if you say so (and maybe he was only being kind and doesn't mean it)
