Facebook is good.

Just keep your privacy settings up.
Unfriend or hide posts from people who make you angry or jealous.

Keep in mind that many of the active members of this Wrong Planet community are on Facebook. I have a facebook community group of 130+ WP which anyone is invited to.

I never used to bother with Facebook but I joined recently to see if I could see a few people starting the same course as me or anyone staying nearby in the same halls of residence. It's been quite useful to get information from about freshers week.

I used to have a profile on another social network site (it was the most commonly used before facebook, kind of like a local myspace) and I didn't like it. After a week I had 200+ friends, which is basically everyone I've ever met in my life, and they all tried to drag me into smalltalk chatting. Very stressful. I just never logged on it again and I never felt the need to make a fb account.
