I have certainly seen some Aspies on message boards who had atrocious typing, but it doesn't seem to be the norm.

When I'm frequenting NT message boards/pages, I often get called out on typing eloquently and falling into language that reads more like a college dissertation paper than part of a conversation. The NTs tend to respond with, "how long did it take you to type that?" Naturally, the answer is, "not nearly as long as you would think."

On NT boards, most of the typists type something like "i am gonna go to the store dis afternood, so i gonna be back in bout 3 hrs." Or worse, "me lyk dat guy" or "he is n00b."

My friends (of which I have few) are NTs, and when I message some of them they tend to type in a poor vernacular, paying no mind to grammar or capitalization. Sometimes I even try to acquiesce to typing as they do, but still observe the same grammatical standards . . . just not the capitalization. It doesn't feel right.

Is there really such a thing as a NT message board? If you mean message boards that are not autism-related, then it would be inaccurate to refer to them as NT message boards because not all of the contributors might be neccessarily neuro-typical. You have no idea which, if any are of the contributors are NT or AS. Writing like a buffoon is not limited to NTs, afterall.

I don't know. I have been on several other Internet boards, and most users wrote correctly, or at least with less mistakes than I expect of my colleagues at work. I think frequent webusers on semi-serious websites tend to write relatively well, probably because they write more often. (Of course, the game-related boards I have read were about turn-based/grand strategy games targetting older people...)

I use a few abreviations (mostly ftw, btw, IMHO, + the latin ones, i.e. and e.g.), but it is mostly because I feel they do not express exactly the same thing as the fully written versions.

It is interesting to note that the bad writers of today would have been the illiterate of a century ago. Literacy is a recent advance. After all, some people are incapable of writing correctly, be it willfully or not. For some, the level of functionality achieved by writing in SMS-style or with enough spelling mistakes to kill a small mammal is entirely sufficient to lead a blissfully satisfied life, because it is not a particular useful skill for a convenience store clerk or manager, or for the director of the Montreal area in internal communications to be sent to all employees (true story).
