''You should stop biting your nails, that's what teenagers do.'' What? Teenage girls want to grow their nails and put nail varnish on. Nail-biting is a common habit among any age group.

''You should wear this, this and this, what you got on is too 'sharp' or not feminine enough.'' So what? What I wear ain't about other people, it's about ME. And I feel quite feminine, thank you.

''Why don't you fancy men your own age, instead of old, fat bus-drivers with beer bellies?'' Young men don't fancy me, old, fat bus-drivers with beer bellies are my type. At least then not many other women go after them so if they're not married I get them all to myself.

''Why are you buying a Simpsons magazine at your age?'' Because I like the Simpsons, and just because it's a cartoon doesn't mean it's exclusively for kids, most episodes are rated 12, and lots of parents don't let their kids watch things that are rated 12 or over, so it's technically a cartoon for teens and adults to enjoy too.

Exactly! as if by saying it was a joke excuses them being rude, disrespectful, hurtful etc. to me. I once called someone on this: I was like, "well, I actually don't think that's funny. Guess I don't have a sense of humour." And her reaction was to get up from her chair, make that "tsc-ahh" disgusted sound and storm out of the room. If it was supposed to be funny, why are they so upset at ME when they didn't get the result they wanted with the joke they created? When I'm making a joke, I actually want it to be funny, and I don't need to insult people who I know couldn't "take it". I need to already have that sort of back-and-forth insulting-each-other-for-fun dynamic with that person in the first place, you know? I don't know, if I genuinely hurt my friends feelings I'd be like, "sorry about that", because, I actually kinda like my friends and care about them.

Someone tonight was driving by and happened to tick me off. I happened to be getting in late off the bus and what not. They openly went, "Look at her. You should not be out this late." I looked at her and said, "Hush and mind your own business."

She then was getting her mail and said goodnight to me. I said "You too. And next time, you shut up and mind your own business."

"That is because I care about you."

I then said, "I appreciate your concerns."

I should have not said what I did but they have been nagging at me a few times about being out late and that there is crime in this area. I just was not in the mood and so I snapped. Good grief, I am not 5 lady.

Guys all of these are great. I am really impressed at the number of different types of responses and some of the responses that would touch people's buttons that I would not think about.

The one that would never have struck me funny was the "You're not alone." I would have never guessed that would a hot button for some. At the same time I can see why it might be.

Anyway,
"Can't you be an average Joe like the rest of us?" I hate that statement simply because it makes another person feel bad for being unique while the other person who says it is insecure.

Openly calling someone ugly

Nagging at someone just because they have their hair a certain way.

I have had that happen too! One night I was out walking and this lady went by and said, "You shouldn't be out walking alone! This is a bad neighborhood! I was in a relatively good mood, so my response to her was, "Well, I pity the person who messes with me," followed by an evil smile. She just stood there, not knowing what to say.

"You’re just making excuses"

I hate that one so much. People use that one if I try to explain the reasons why I can't/won't do something. It's easier to just not explain why and just flat out refuse with no reason given.

"You're just saying that because you hate black people."
"You're a misogynist."
"I'm pretty sure your motivations for that are racism/sexism/antisemitism."
"You're doing that on purpose."
"You're taking it personally, aren't you?"

I get these on a daily basis. Of course, the best way to deal with people who disagree with you is to convince yourself and those in 'your camp' that the other person is just acting out of hate, emotion or insanity so you don't have to see their point and admit you're wrong. Here's some news - I have very little feelings either way.

Another thing that annoys me - things people say that they don't mean. The people who are honest may insult me at times, but they're much better than those transparently trying to tell me things are much better than they are.

It's better to hear from a male friend that "no woman could possibly ever be attracted to you" (actual quote, about a month ago) than it is to hear from a female acquaintance that "some women might be attracted to you." (actual quote, about three months ago) At least he's honest. If you're telling a white lie, make sure it's not identified as a lie. It's the difference between making someone feel better and making them distrust and dislike you for years to come.

People trying to feign genuine interest in your situation. As with the previous example, they're not even trying to mislead you. It's just a social norm.

"How are you?"
- "Fine. Couldn't you think of something better?"

Bottom line for things that annoy me: if what you're saying is BS, try harder.

@hidivinemajesty. How was she lying. Probability wise there is some woman that would find you attractive, it is almost inconcievable that no one could possibly be attracted to you

True. There is a lid for every pot, as they say.

Well thank you so much. That sounds like an idea that you would find an in an anime series about an evil man with bugs in their eyes.

When someone adds "you know" to a sentence all the time. My mom does it, and so I do it, too. It's really annoying, I can never catch myself in time.

My husband does that, too. Once I asked him why he does it (I do it too since being with him) and he said that its sort of a filler because of slow processing time between what he wants to say and actually forming the sentence to say it. He says "like" a lot, too.
