It's always wise to say you're sorry for whatever it was that you said, and inform people that you didn't know that it was a very offensive or inappropriate thing to say. Promise them verbally that you will never say it again.

the only problem there is when your sleepy frontal lobes fail to pass on the message [or even be aware of anything wrong at the time] that you have committed a faux pas, until like a week later in the middle of the night when you bolt upright in bed and shout OH NO!! ! :(

auntblabby, so true, yes, that is exactly what happens to me!! If I had a dollar for every time the "penny drops" a day later, a week later, that something I said was why the room went quiet or the person seemed mad at me, I'd be rich now.

Sometimes the penny drops for me several decades later.

well, at least you didn't have to "practice every day to find some clever lines to say to make the meaning come through"

Get a charming, neuro-typical partner who jumps in whenever your comments fall flat, your jokes go unnoticed or you say something potentially offensive.

No, you may not borrow mine.

I tend to do the same thing myself..it seems the easiest thing for me to do.

Ok, well, I'm not an Aspie (my son is), but I often wonder if I am! I say ridiculous things all the time. I've even lost friends and in those cases I can only think that I must've said something, but I have no idea what. Seriously. I should get diagnosed myself. Ugh. And the bolted up in bed later that night or days later is torture!

It depends on how serious the stupid question is.

If it is something like "what colour is my shirt?", you can use a joke or funny comment to laugh it off "e.g. im actually purple colour blind, so I didn't know it was purple"

however if it's something like "what is your name?" you should sincerely apologise for any ignorance on your part

In the past I had a habit of digging myself a hole so for me saying nothing is a good strategy. the conversation moves on and no hole gets dug.

Personally, I wish I was a living cartoon character. Then I could self immolate without being hurt.

carry on as usual. "stupidity" is in the mind of the beholder.

when people groan at what i say, it is not a sufficient damping factor to my momentum, and there comes a point where i do not care what anyone thinks, and i just go solo with my foot flattened on my accelerator pedal of enthusiasm.

i have the attitude "nothing i say is stupid. the stupidity that you see in what i say is born and bred inside your own head."
