I've never liked nick-names. I've taken a few language classes in my life. Usually the teacher does this stupid thing where they make the students adopt a name from the language they are studying. I finally had enough and told a teacher that the annoyance of this practice actually made it harder for me to properly study the language since I would get angry every time someone called me by the wrong name.
Maybe it's because my name is rather unique (it's a combination of Swedish, Mongolian and British names). I also feel that personal identity is very important. And also the nicknames I was given when very young were intended to hurt me, so that didn't leave a favorable impression.
Nicknames are fine for people who like them, but I feel very strongly they should not be imposed on people who prefer to be referred to by their given name.
