There is a Halloween party this Saturday. It's an open invitation party. Every time I go to a social event like this I spend the evening bored and ignored. Nobody bothers to to talk to me, even people I know who happen to be there just sort of do their own thing which is fine and I don't begrudge them. The attention that does come my way is from people I know and can't stand or weirdos who creep me out. Sometimes I get so depressed from regret I actually start to feel slightly physically ill. But I think to myself sitting alone without friends is not really what I want to do all the time either. So I am undecided whether to take my chances- go to the party and hope for a good time or risk wasting even more time of my life doing nothing and standing there alone like a statue.

If you go, is there anything you can do different that will change the usual outcome? Maybe you could take the initiative and talk to other people first? Before you go, could you work up a list of topics you can talk about? Is there anyone there who might share any of your interests? And you don't have to stay there a long time, if you don't want to. Stay as long as you're comfortable and don't feel that you have to stay a certain amount of time, even if you're the first to leave.
