Is it ok to text people at night?

Ettiquette question: When I want to text someone, should I wait until I think they're awake, or should I treat it like email, and text them whenever I want?

Truth is it's completely impossible to know when someone's free to read an SMS message. I use all electronic communication quite sparingly as a result of experience.

If I'm texting them, I don't care if they read it right away. I really want to know if people are likely to be angry that their phone makes a noise and wakes them up every time I text them. If people don't typically wake up when they recieve a text, then I would think it's ok.

I wouldn't txt anyone at an unsociable hour. You don't know how their phone is setup for alarm when receiving a txt and they might misinterpret your txt, not as a msg to read later, but as a demand for attention at some ungodly hour. If the response can wait, then so can the txt.

Many people are awake at night, so it would depend on their schedule as to if they'd see it right away....though not so sure timing matters so much with texts since if someones sleeping they'll always be able to see it when they get up. Might annoy them a bit if they have a text tone or their phone buzzes and it wakes them up...but if they really didn't want to be disturbed they could turn the volume off, or not have it loud enough to wake them.

If I don't want to be bothered I have my volume off, otherwise I don't care if I get woken up...then it just means if I am too tired to answer I wont till I actually get up.

To me, as long as it's not pretty late, I'll text them. Typically, I stop somewhere close to 11.

I see no issues.

If a person wants privacy, they either put their phone to silent mode, airplane mode, or just turn it off.

The text will show up and wait to be read.

If a person doesn't do any of this, they shouldn't complain about being bothered. I know that my family would turn the ringer off on the phone after a certain hour (before cell phones). We didn't have anyone who should call us that late in the evening. Landline phones MUST ring (unless ringer is turned off), so you can expect you might be disturbing someone. Cell phones give the owner more options.
