I never really notice it until someone points it out but when I'm talking to someone face to face my response is usually to either fake laugh at what they said (only when I have no idea what to say) or reply to them and add a fake laugh at the end of my sentence. I do this all the time! Especially with people I'm comfortable around like my siblings. One of my sisters even picked up the habit off of me. But I have no idea why I do it.

I think it's my way of trying to be sociable and trying to act like I'm happy when I'm talking to people, just like how people fake smile at each other during idle chatter. But I don't know for sure. I know it annoys people because I'm always laughing, even when things aren't funny, it's just something I've always done. People have often asked me in the past "Why are you laughing?" and I don't realize I'm offending them by doing so, it's just habit.

Anyway I wanted to know if it is a common trait in people with AS or am I just really odd?
Does anyone else here do this? And if so, why?

Thank you,

- Riku

I do this, but more so when I am nervous or if I think of something funny that only *I* get.

NT's do this too, it's not at all unusual.

It's a nervous tic for me, and it really annoys me when I notice it.

I tend to put on a fake laugh whenever I'm a bit embarrassed or nervous about something, or find the discussion a bit...awkward. I've seen this instinct occur in NTs as well as other people on the spectrum.

I do find it a bit annoying, though, when people make a laugh after everything that has been said, or everything they say, for no particular reason. It's hard to listen to people who do that a lot.

I started doing this in my mid-20s (copying an NT I knew) to make me seem less intense.

I think I totally botch it every time (I think it sounds fake), but now it's what I do when I'm nervous. I am now actively trying to stop.

But then I'm back to my old problem: how to not seem too intense.

Meh, screw it. There is no way to win at the NT game. I think I'll just seem intense and laugh when I really want to.

I have that habit to. i think its a method I developed to deal with my nervousness when talking to people. I find it hard to stop myself from doing this, which is a bit annoying because when i talk to someone who is also nervous he thinks im laughing at him.

This happens because we are pretending in front of those people and we are watching our behaviour too that we are pretending at the same time. We know what we are doing. That's why we laugh.

Hahaha that's a funny one (actually not funny at all)

yes NT always do that as a coverage of their social embarrassment. It's perfectly normal as everyone puts up a poker face

It's very common here then people fake laugh for everything even if a guy is telling a unfortunate story of someone on the news , died or sucide . They make a mock out of it and I was the only one saying that's so sad and walk out of the conversation. They get it when someone laugh you should join in the laughter even if it's not funny. I don't get them NT!

As such I walked out of conversation that involves crude gossips of others suddenly. It reflects really bad on me as anti social for NT norms.

However aspie and Austism do the opposite. They don't laugh at people's joke, cause they take things literally. When people are in serious or frustration, they smile. When people are happy, they are sad, or simply expressionless.

But if u master fake laugh and look like a real one , you'll be successful and people feel like you are a happy person to be with !
