Hi:
I have found out that a majority of NT's outside of the autism world seem to refuse attendance at parties of people with autism. Yet these are NTs who appear to get along with us outside of being invited to things and especially if you get to know them.

What kind of things happen at party's for people with autism?

We watch movies, go to art festivals, go out to eat and play board games.

The board games and art festivals are probably too dull for them ?

When they go out to eat they may feel outnumbered and out of place, like I feel most of the time.
It's not a pleasant feeling.

It's probably because they don't want to feel like the weird one. I guess we are kind of used to feeling like that, but most neurotipicals aren't. That's my best guess anyway.

I think it could be because NT's would feel like they're "walking on eggshells." They don't want to inadvertently offend someone with autism at one of their gatherings.

Or it could be prejudice against people with autism.

Or perhaps a little bit of both.

Very wrong to stereotype NTs as drinkers/drunks. Many many people (NT or not) don't drink much.

I go out to places and drink, since when is that an exclusively neurotypical activity?

Are the NT's invited but never turn up?
Or do they turn up once and not come again?

NTs tend to avoid the disabled and just people different than them in general

I haven't have friends since high school and all the "normal" kids wanted to do was drink. Most people that I know of nowadays generally drink. It wouldn't be that unusual if someone who drinks was invited to a party where there wasn't alcohol and not really enjoy themselves. When people like to drink they like to drink, and that's all there is to it. Then again I did say "I guess" so that would suggest that I'm not 100% sure of that answer.

I think Jacoby hit the nail on the head.

Most neurotypicals see autism as a disability, whether they admit it or not, and they see disability as innately weird and kind of gross. One autistic person is fine as a friend, but a group of them, where the neurotypical is the minority, would scare the h*ll out of 90% of NT people.

I am VERY comfortable around autistic people, probably more so than other neurotypicals. I would probably not have come to an autism group outing (prior to my career change into critical autism studies) because I would have felt I was intruding. That no one would want me there. I would have felt like the oppressor in a group that would otherwise be relaxed.

Nobody likes being an outsider to a group. I think everyone likes to hang out with like-minded people, and NT people are no different.
