I agree with vetivert.

Sensory blocking devices are the only thing that have allowed me to any sleep this semester.

I try to go to bed at 11pm, while my roomate will do so at midnight. Despite him knowing I'm trying to go to sleep, he still insists on having the lights on in the room when ever he's on two feet and having the fan cranked full blast and the windows and shades wide open (a whole 'nother issue with in itself) letting the drone of night time and the orange glow of the sodium vapor street lights.

Cotton balls stuffed in my ears have been the only thing allowing me to fall asleep.

Though I never had to share a room I did live in an apartment with some poor sound insulation and people who liked loud music in my first year at uni. Ear plug are the way to go, I used to ‘borrow’ some from the workshop in our department.

I found earplugs and those sleep mask eye-cover things to be somewhat helpful. You could also try listening to music on your headphones, which will help distract your mind a bit.

As for moving to another room, it's not necessarily disasterous. I had very serious issues with my roommate in freshman year, who I am almost certain was bipolar. We had very bad arguements and we needed to see the resident cooridinator a few times a week until we could get the problems solved. I also got sent to counseling : /. Things never got resolved. I just ended up moving out midway through the semester, and while my second roommate was not ideal, she was far better than the first. It made a lot of things easier for me to deal with.
