I dislike both of them. I need to see the person I'm talking to, not just hear them (whether the voice is their's or some narrator mimicing them in my head). On the other hand, text does allow me to plan out my thoughts better, but I'm thinking of e-mails. I've never actually talked to anyone online, although I've seen it done.

Instant Messenger. I can almost talk to anybody on the computer.

I have a hard time with the phone, but it's better than face-to-face conversation.

I don't mind phones so much as long as my environment is very quiet so that I don't have to concentrate as hard on what the person is saying. I don't think I would mind phones much at all (in such an environment) if I could find a friend with whom I really enjoyed talking. I just don't talk much on the phone these days except when I call my mother or speak to my caseworker. That's about it.

It's all IM for me. I deal with the phone only if I have to. Even with Skype, I use the IM feature rather than the phone feature.

Besides the whole business of just not being comfortable on the phone, there's also the fact that using IM means I have time to think about what I want to say and how I want to say it.

IM usually. I often even use IP Relay over the Internet to call people on the telephone.

Part of this is I type in the offline world anyway, so the phone doesn't give me that much advantage, and in fact many people hang up on me even if I warn them that I am typing and need time.

Since I am hearing impaired, it is socially acceptable for me to use a tty for phone communication. Ohio has a relay service where people can use their tty's to call the relay service and they will call whoever you need to and talk to them for you and you communicate with them through the relay service. A tty is basically a telephone with a keyboard and screen on it.

Phone with some people if I initiate the phone call, or am not busy. ((I mostly am, or do not want to talk unless I initiate it.)) I hate phones otherwise; the idea of my having to be OK with dropping everything I'm doing to talk seems like an imposition. I make sure the other person is OK with talking (expect if I'm calling in panic mode and need immediate help, and/or it's a quick call.)) Otherwise, IM or email. Lately I haven't even been into IMing all that much.

Email any day. The noise of the phone going off, usually when I am doing something else is quite irritating, then of course, because it is mobile phones (cellphones) these days, I am often treated to the screech of sirens, the racket of trains and lots of other background noise from the other end of the phone.

Email lets me compose my thoughts before committing them to public consumption. IM is OK because I am a reasonably fast typist, though I only known two people on IM and one of them tends to use the phone to call me half way through the IM session. Now that seems really strange.

I'm not a big fan of phones. Mainly because the person isn't there in front of me, so I can't play off thier reactions and emotions, and I can never quite work out if it's my turn to speak.

Also I hate making phone calls because I feel like I'm . . . intruding or something.

I absolutely hate telemarketers. During the summer, I am the only one who ever answers the phone at home, and I always have to deal with them. I have gotten plenty of unwanted credit cards or ended up answering surveys I did not want to answer due to my misunderstanding the people on the other end. I have also gotten some very rude callers. Now, instead of dealing with that business and their manipulative techniques, I just hang up on them.

Argh, I can totally associate on that. Half the time, they talk so fast or have such a heavy accent that I can barely process what they're even trying to say to me! I've seriously gotten calls from telemarketers where I couldn't understand a word they were saying. >_<

Incidentally, if you've not already signed up for the US federal do-not-call list, do so now: http://www.donotcall.gov/

As soon as I realize they're a telemarketer, I hang up. Not a "nice" thing to do, but I'm not going to buy anything fromt hem anyway.

Oh God damn it, I hate phones. I feel so awkward talking into thin air. I sometimes cannot think of the appropriate thing to say and end up just automatically echoing what the other person says, which doesn't exactly move the conversation briskly forward. Also my voice sounds like a ten-year-old's over the phone, which isn't great for my confidence about it.

I can talk on the phone, bu I'm usually self-conscious of my voice, as I hate hearing it when played back, I cannot imagine how it must sound to the person on the other end of the phone. I don't call people very often, unless I want to get back in touch with them or discuss plans etc. I espescially hate those long, tedious, and sometimes excruciating moments of silence where no one has anything to say.
