How many of you know people who are Aspies?
I'm the only HFA I know, and I know 1 dxed Aspie and 2 self-dx at my university. They're cool folks, but the guy I know who's dxed is... I don't know how to describe it, but I sort of don't get along with him because we just don't have anything in common and he talks about private stuff (like sexuality) in public, really loud. I'm cool with the self-dx kids, they're just like everyone else but again, disparate interests / lifestyle.
I don't know if this makes me self-hating, but I prefer to hang out with folks who like the same activities as me (spirituality, music, etc) whether they are autistic or not. And I prefer to hang out with folks who have some modicum of 'what's appropriate'.

I'm friends or aquaintances with quite a few Aspies. Two of them are high school aged girls that I mentor, and the others I have met through the Aspie group in my university: one of whom is a close friend.
There's such a range of people in that group. There's some people there who you'd suspect something "was up" with them upon meeting them, but there are 2-3 others there that apparently have a diagnosis but come across as completely "normal!"
I'm also friends with many people who I highly suspect are Aspies (they fit the diagnosis well but were either diagnosed with something else or nothing at all)

Given a “tentative” diagnosis as a child as I needed services at school for what was later correctly discovered to be a major anxiety disorder.
This misdiagnosis caused me significant stress, which lessened upon finding out the truth about myself from my current and past long-term therapists - that I am an anxious and highly sensitive person but do not have an autism spectrum disorder.
My diagnoses - social anxiety disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder.
I’m no longer involved with the ASD world.
