I my personal experience, it's certain fanboys/fangirls that I have found to be rude, though it is mainly based off the fandom they come from. For example, I have found the Kirby and EarthBound fans to be some of the nicest compared to the Sonic and Kingdom Hearts fans.

This is precisely the reason I stick to SP gaming, besides which I hate to be labelled ret*d by some bunch of idiots who happen to be in favour that week(the epithet they apply would be most apposite if directed at them, for they simply don't think through what the real soncept of gaming is: to have fun, to enjoy the experience); I try to enjoy the game and do my best and play fair etc, it's just packed with hackers and mob rule to my mind.

I haven't honestly done a whole lot of online gaming(6 months worth), SW: Republic Commandos servers are generally what spring to mind though.

I play that game... I was shocked to see that anybody here does. There aren't that many people who play it. The worst people on there are the spammers and people who say noob after you kill them.

I game on xbox live, and yes, gamers there tend to be very rude, or if not rude, stupid.

Theres lots of annoying kids/teens on there. Lots of usage of the "N-Word", and "fa***t"

Depends on the games really. I will admit to being an obnoxious ass on a bunch of games (AceOnline, various MUDs.). On some games I am not though (Mabinogi, Jedi Knight 3: Jedi Academy, Freelancer)

As for Tabletop games. From my own experiences, alot of groups will initiate the new people into thier group (usually involves the new person being the resident butt monkey until a new person joins in, sometimes though they will stop after a few game nights.)

I still play it, yes. Havent been on for like a year or two. I used to be on the Asylum51 servers, really loved the community of players on there.
It is one of my favorite games of all time as well.

Freelancer - The only good thing to come out of microsoft :D

for lack of better words, halo in general is overrated by far. It didnt revolutionize anything in my opinion. Other FPS's had better stories, better design concepts and everything. Good examples? Goldeneye and PerfectDark

I suppose that most gamers (I'll assume you're talking about video games here) either practise gaming skills or social graces. I'm a gamer myself but I do agree with the notion that some gamers can be rude.
I know a guy at my school who always hangs out in the library and plays Halo and such with his friends. He has always been rude to me and makes snide comments about me on passing me by... and not to mention he's pastey as all getout. =P

Actually, the OP was talking about a tabletop pencil&paper game, where some people do have - well, "underdeveloped social skills" would be a polite way to phrase it...

I'd expect rudeness from a devoted Halo player - the online play is solely about killing other players repeatedly, as often as possible, after all. (And you should check out the voice chat during gameplay! If Bungie actually enforced their policy against abusive language, half the players would get lifetime bans! Personally, when I do play online, I mute all the other players - easy to change in the Defaults, thankfully - but I don't play online much any more anyway, due to the volume of people who've discovered how to use "lagging" to win any encounter automatically, by freezing all the other characters in place and killing them, then permitting their players to access the network again, just in time to die...)
