I go to the gym by myself as well. I have a trainer though. I just started that a couple of months ago. Most of the women there do it as a social thing. Me - I do my training and then I'm on my Ipod. Having a conversation while working out just doesn't work for me.
Wow. Working out is a terrible time to socialize. If you are having a convo, you probably aren't working hard enough! Even with friends, we split up and do separate things. Freakin' weird. I would love to do a trip by myself someday. I like to have little driving adventures, sometimes just to explore. It's nice not worrying about a passenger.

That was my thought exactly. I see people all the time talking to each other or talking on the phone on the cardio machines. If can have a conversation your not working hard enough for it to matter.

I agree and have had the same thought. In fact thinking of the gym example makes me realize that I can see parallels with this in a lot of things. There are a lot people who 'participate' in activities merely as a means to socialize. They are not actually focused on what they're doing. They're more focused on who else is there, what everyone else is doing and talking to other people. The place where I see this the most is in work situations, but it's across the board. The difference with me, is that when I do an activity I'm focused on that and that alone.

In the context of the gym, it's kind of funny how many people pay the membership but they're not really getting the work out.

In 1988 I drove from Ontario, Canada to Texas, to California, to British Columbia and back to Ontario. Every mile by myself. I've told many people about this trip. Several have asked "You did this by yourself?" Yup, I did. They seem so surprised. They seem to have a hard time believing it is possible. It certainly was possible. And not only that it was fun, memorable.

Haha i remember this one time where i had arranged to go out with some freinds to see a movie but i had to wait for them to arrive in town so we could meet so i was sitting there all alone in t he corner of a Mcdonalds drinking a cup of coffee :P I remember the looks i got from people it was a mix between pity and well i guess a feeling of what's with the loner? To be honest i had a good time just watching people and how they react in conversation its interesting some of the actions you can see people do.

People watching is always fun. I like seeing people when they're being witty with eachother and watching how quick they comeback.

Yes. I go to the gym alone several times a week and almost always shop alone (though I shop much less frequently aside from groceries). I occasionally go to resturants alone, but not the movies as yet.

I do go on lots of solo hikes. Typically I find hiking solo to be a bit more relaxing than going in a group (even when I'm physically working hard). Fortunately there are a lot of pretty nice hikes very close to where I live.

I find that there's a fair amount of activities that I've done by myself that most people don't do alone and have said they'd be uncomfortable doing alone. Some of them include:

going to a movie (I've done this a few times and I go on slow days when there's the least amount of people there - less noisy)
eating in a restaurant (although I don't do it often, I have done it and it doesn't really bother me)
taking a trip or vacation
shopping
attending a religious service
attending a social function (I usually leave early though)

I was wondering how many other people don't mind doing activities by themselves.

I don't mind doing those things alone.. I'm used to it (by myself or with friends). I find that being by myself at times is actually a good thing. Allows me the space to reflect and that sorta thing.
