For me, I can make pretty decent conversations and keep them going. I learned how to converse before I learned how to great people and open a conversation: its kinda weird. Now I kinda got both down. My greeting skills are still a bit weak tho.
Conversation can go like
1 person: Hi (name)
2 person: Hi (name), how are u doing or hows it going or what are u up to
1 person: gives an open ended response, something where the conversation can be continued, or if they give a close ended response, conversation ends
2 person: responds to that
1 person: might ask how the 2 person is doing
2 person: gives response
From their the conversation just builds off. Its good to focus and ask questions about the other person. Dont ask too many questions tho, I have that problem. Even if your super focused on the other person, make sure u include comments pertaining to yourself from time to time. If the conversation is dying and u wanna keep it going then think of something relevant to that person and ask them about it. If u cant, then make a comment about your surroundings and hope things go forward from their.
I have the problem where I can keep conversations going on too long, I dont get the hint if the persons trying to end the conversation sometimes.
Sometimes making conversations online with my RL friends can be hard cause I dont know what their thinking, since its all words. I cant respond approprietly cause they arent showing me any social cues so theirs more guesswork in trying think about how their responding. Whereas before I didnt think about it as much cause I didnt read that much into body language before.
