Sometimes it's okay to answer seriously to a joke.

Some other times it means you are joking back.

I do that too, although with my group of friends I can play the seriousness off as a joke itself. Although this doesn't always work either. And when you think they are being joking but is being serious... Ah, fun.

That is the most common response from me. I have no idea why I do that - insist on showing how I would answer if it were serious - but I do. It usually gets taken as my way of joking back.
