Where I come from, it's generally rude to call people by their surnames unless they specifically tell you to use it.

I could even talk to the president and he wouldn't mind me using his first name when I would greet him for the first time.

My friend calls me Roy as a joke. I don't mind. I kind of like being called something other than my first name.
