Am I someone else's "best" friend?

Probably - (recently) ex- significant other. I think I'm still - at least thus far, her "best friend" - despite that it's mostly just virtual - and always been far too much long distance and most all that time apart. And despite the fact that - at least for me - the communications are / feel quite strained for me. The "break up" is relatively recent (less than two months ago) ... but ... been over 4 years since we were even in the same place at the same time. So, ... it's asymmetrical, kind'a awkward - at least at present ... sort of a "re-settling" - to whatever it will "normalize" too. Also, in that it will probably never be more than almost entirely virtual and at best almost entirely (very) long distance - I think too, I'm weaning myself from that "relationship" / "connection" - even if I don't so much want to ... perhaps more so that I need to. I really want something IRL. I'm far too sick of long distance and someone that's almost always never within nor available to be within arm's reach.

And other than that, who have I been "best" friend for? Geez, ... I'm 49, and ... I dunno, ... probably ... all the way back to ... high school? Maybe even elementary school? I think at least for the most part it's been a very long time since someone would regard me as their best friend. Maybe some shortish exceptions along the way (e.g. in/around context of other that was relationship, or another "friend" where things were quite asymmetrical (they were never capable of being that good of a friend to me)). But I think that's quite it.

I'm not anyone's best friend either. I might have been at one time, but I've pretty much lost all my good friends over the years. I can't believe part of it isn't my fault. People grow apart, but come on!

I'm convinced that the people I consider my "friends" wouldn't notice if I stopped talking to them. Once I got into high school, making friends just seemed too difficult to bother with. Anyone feel the same?

<------ Can Geddy Lee be my friend? I don't know him, but I'm fairly certain we'd hit it off :)

Yeah. I have quite a few best friends (mixed neurologies). Not all of them come from the same place or are in the same social circles, though.

I have 3 close friends but all 3 of them have friends that are closer to them then me. So I dont think I'm anyone's "best friend". I am there close friend however. I've only been someones best friend once but that friendship ended pretty badly.

I've got a best BEST friend. We refer to each other as such. We're both Aspies, and we've known each other since we were fourteen. I'm really close to three other Auties/Aspies I met in college, but we don't live near each other right now. My bro guyfriend doesn't live near me either, but we get together when we can. We all still keep in touch almost daily. All of these friends know each other and are all friends as well, it's an ASD circle. I've got a couple of less close friends that I see every once in a while, but I don't connect with them as much on an emotional level, we have common interests that keep us together.

Best friends in adulthood?

Um. I don't think adults are BFFs.

Close friends, yes. Long-term friends, sometimes. BFFs? Rarely.

Most people are lucky to have a few close friends they're comfortable with. BFFs that they do everything with all the time? That's rare.

I was thinking along the same lines, but since my native language is not english I am not sure I understood the question correct (on contemplation) when I first read it.

There are the kind of childhood friends that you hang out with every day and do everything with.

Then there are the more adult version. You do no longer hang out every day (people move, get partners, study, get jobs, family etc.). There are no longer time to just hang out every day. For me these best friends or close friends are people that will always be there for me (and the other way round) it doesn´t matter that we do not see each other in long periods. You are able to share everything that happens in your life and sometimes get some advice (sometimes just somebody who cares listening).

I guess these are the two categories BFF and close friends that you distinguish

I used to be a lot of people's best friend now I'm nobody's. But that's okay I kinda like it like that, less obligations to see anyone :)

I've had a few different best friends throughout my life but i've never had a large network of friends... It's kinda weird how it worked out that way, when one person or small group I hung out with almost exclusively would move on, another somehow came along after a couple months..... Not to say that i'm happy at all with my social situation, I really wish I could become close to or at least feel comfortable around more people. I have a best friend now who I believe has Aspergers (as do others). Unfortunately, i'm moving soon (I just feel like I need a change and have an opportunity to move) and i'm afraid I won't be able to find a close friend when I do.
