I live in the country and my parents are both police officers (no public transit, and they're always working shifts so their vehicles are never at my disposal), so I've been driving since 16. I bought my first car at 17 (a crappy 1993 Ford Escort GT), and last week scrapped it and bought a 2008 Cobalt Lt. I LOVE driving, the only thing I hate are the other (often incompetent and slow) drivers. I am also pretty aggressive at driving. If someone's going the speed limit, I'll ride their tail until I can pass (weather/traffic permitting). Also, if yall can learn to drive stick, DO IT. Once you learn the superiority of the manual transmission, you will never want to drive another crummy automatic. The unfortunate thing, however, is that owning your own car is bloody expensive! Especially when you can only work part-time because you're in college. I currently make about $500 every 2 weeks, and just over $400 of that goes into my gas, insurance, and loan payments, leaving me little money to save.

I was lucky that back in the Sixties, unless your parents filled out paperwork for an exemption, everyone had to take Driver's Ed to get a high school diploma, Kids in special ed were exempt, but in those days, most high schools did not mainstream either - no one even knew about AS or HFA - unless one's autism was highly dysfunctional, everyone went to regular school, and survived it or dropped out. or got sent to special ed or took 'independent study' like me for some classes. Truthfully, no one knew what to do with Aspies back then. Not having a label though made us work really hard to adapt somehow.

Driver's Ed. was free, required and took a whole semester. Most kids got learner's permit at 14, and then qualified for a 'daytime only' license at 15. If I remeber correctly you had to get a B or better or wait for another year. And then at 16, if you basically had passed you could apply for a full license. Anyone could apply at 18 - classes or not - but you still had to pass the state tests - written and practical for all of the levels.

The high school program was great. They showed us how cars actually worked under the hood, and we learned practical basic maintenance like checking fluids, changing tires and even the oil. We practiced on a driving range at school at least 3 days a week They also had us watch a horrifying film of real kids our own age dead in their mangled vehicles - it showed lots of total blood and guts inquest type footage from the Ohio State Highway patrol - they emphasized that mostly it was from drinking and not paying attention to the speed limits. It was not fake and some students would get physically sick watching it ...That movie did more for preventing drunk driving and speeding than anything we could have been told...those images are still seared in my memory 47 years later.

I'm 21 and still don't have it

I failed the knowledge test by one question back in high school.

How do i get to school and downtown, NJ Transit buses and PATCO High Speedline... which unfortunately, bus service is limited to hourly service (half hour during rush hours on some routes) where I am at

I got it, got my learners at 17, mid at 18 and finally got the full one at 22 after 2 meltdowns, meny shutdowns, failing 2 written and 1 road test, I don't like the road much though. My Dad rammed me through the process and paid most of it and my insurance that i'd let lapse if he didn't. Got an old Dodge Dakota I share, it works great. I'm good until 80 now! when the retest comes up.

I've had one since I was 16. No real problems (was involved in 2 accidents--both of them NOT my fault--but more a "wrong place at the wrong time" deal), but other than that, no problems. As funny as it sounds, I drive more on the cautious side, than the aggressive, like some of my NT friends do.

But other than that, I love to drive. I actually use it as a method to calm myself.

But this leads me to a question as I was looking at some of the responses... I know a person who doesn't like driving because she's scared of other people and how they drive? Is this a typical trait of people with Aspergers (they don't like driving or have no desire to drive). I know when I was 16, I wanted my license ASAP, and a car as well.

the written test for me was the easiest part, but the interaction with the tester during the practical was nerve-wracking for me.

Same here on the road test, when I became anxious like that I 2nd guess myself and forget things like watching speed, harder since I wasn't using my own car and therefore wasn't completely used to it. The testers had a tendancy to try to start small talk that I could not engage in, infact I found it distracting. They wanted left or right turns and I had to always point and confirm what was that was. When they asked for my medical history in the car I chose not to disclose anything so I doubt they knew I had AS. I think racing all these years also numbed my need to drive on the road.

I got it a couple of months before turning 18. I was pretty worried at first but now I enjoy driving.

I got one at 18 after failing a driver's test twice on an open country road. lmao.

A better question is how many of those with a DL SHOULD have one?

Not me. :-)

I got it at 18 and the old guy who tested me told my mother (and everyone around) that in the many, many years he has been testing new drivers I was the best he has ever seen. While I find driving easy, I know my brother didn't get his until 23 and my GF at 22 still doesn't have one in an area where a license is practically a requirement.

i can hardly wait for the future [should i live long enough to run into it] where all cars will be self-driving and there will be only vehicle licences [like making sure it is legally roadworthy and not a hazard] and no more need for driver's licenses/testing. google is working on this right now!
