Then it's too weird to talk to someone on the phone, and have them saying how I'm different than they expected.

:D I used to meet a lot of people over the phone, then later meet them in RL, and I got that all the time - I thought you'd have dark hair, yada yada yada...reminds me of Roadhouse, when everybody who meets Patrick (Dalton) Swayze for the first time says "I thought you'd be bigger."

Almost every internet friend I've spoken to on the phone couldn't get over my Southern accent. Some people have been very rude about it.

The first internet friend I ever spoke to on the phone said something like..."Wow you have a Southern accent...but you sounded so smart in your emails." Then she actually denied that she was revealing her own prejudice.

I made the mistake of meeting a guy in person, after the very first thing he said to me on the phone was, "You sound like a hick." Never again.

On the other hand, it has made me realize how much a person who meets me for the first time face-to-face might misjudge me by my accent (such as work supervisors who get transferred in from other parts of the country).

Well heck, a friend I met online turned out to be one of the most awesome people I know. These "Vapor friends" can be quite great. Just be careful, they might not be who they say they are.
