I have no idea what it means to be myself either. I guess my only "natural" self is the way I am when I am completely alone and not interacting with anybody, but that cannot be transferred to the public, because responding to external stimuli requires conscious thought about what is appropriate.

When I was young, I would hear people give others the advice, "Just be yourself". I had no idea what they were talking about. How could you be anything but yourself? Particularly, when you are by yourself much of the time (which I was).

Because you hear others give this advice often, I can only guess that many people “act out” in order to form an impression on others.

When I was a child and was told to be myself, I just stopped censoring myself which was not a good idea.
