Why Do Some Facebook Posts Get More Likes?

I've gone back and forth between posting stuff because I like it and because it's self-expressive, and posting stuff because I think it will get a lot of likes. Make no mistake, there is an enormous amount of attention-seeking behavior on facebook. We might even argue that the whole point of social media is to get attention.
In my approach to life, I've found it's best to have no expectations at all, inasmuch as that's possible. Having low expectations is a no-lose situation, because either you're pleasantly surprised, or you're right. But I've found it a de-motivating way to live. I prefer to have no expectations.

that makes sense. i personally have not been able to suspend my expectations entirely, and merely having low ones has been enough to avoid most pain. no matter what i do an expectation or two seems to find its way into my mind somehow. not sure how you do it.
social media does make it easier for egos to inflate, sure. but perhaps that's not what the creators had in mind.

Most of the posts that get lots of likes are post that are generally vapid, insipid, narcissistic, and superficial.

Then when someone posts something that's well thought out or that takes a great deal of talent or skill, it gets hardly any likes at all.

Can someone explain to me why silly, vapid, insipid, narcissistic posts get lots of likes, while deeper and more thoughtful posts get far fewer?

Is anything you say actually true? I said, I have worked and been logical for 5 days this week, if you want a real answer, google it. Know your audience op. Some people don't want deep and meaningful, they want their world view to be validated. If they want deep and meaningful discussions, they aren't doing it on facebook

I've been told here and there that I'm good looking. The picture I posted on facebook that got me the most likes, and the most attention, was a selfie I took in a flattering red shirt after I'd lost some weight. I looked pretty good in that picture, and yeah, I was surprised at how much attention I got. The response was much more positive than any response I've gotten from something "deep" I've posted, or any pics of me doing something that required skill.

I guess it's impossible to have no expectations at all. Maybe it's more of a matter of how invested I am in my expectations, and how much I cling to them.

This seems especially true of political posts. Most people seem to post political stuff with the belief that the'll get a rousing chorus of "Amen!" from everyone, and they sometimes act shocked, upset, or offended when someone posts a comment disagreeing with them.
