After spending time on Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr, my theory is social media is a good platform for people to show off all of the good and minimize the bad. Likes, reacts, and retweets give people the validation they need and those same people selectively choose the bad things to show the world for the sake of farming sympathy and camaraderie; it's game, so to speak. The reason so many relationships flounder is because both people are playing that game in the relationship and neither one of them are really in it for love, they just need someone to humor them. It's honestly part of the reason I'm so reluctant to date - I'm not one for superfluous selfies and farming for likes.
