I agree. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. "That's old for a cat" (or dog) means exactly that: the animal lived longer than its average lifespan. In most Western cultures, people like the idea of having a pet around for a long time, and it's one of the ways they word it. Unless the person has a history of being a bully (like a school bully) or mocking you (like a lot of therapists), assume their remark is complimentary. It's best for your own mental health, and it avoids the risk of creating bad blood with an unnecessary negative reaction.
